Teaching

Experience Media,
Then Question It

Every student is already an experienced media user. I help them turn that experience into critical understanding, equipping them to see media as a force shaping how we know the world and each other.

Teaching Philosophy

  1. 01Relevance
  2. 02Peer Learning
  3. 03Application
  4. 04Openness
  5. 05Reflexivity

My teaching is guided by five principles: relevance, peer learning, application, openness, and reflexivity. I make content relevant by connecting it to what students already know and by teaching in the formats they already live in, such as short videos, interactive quizzes, and AI chatbots. Students bring rich and varied backgrounds, so I build peer learning into group projects and discussions where they apply course concepts to real world cases.

I keep the classroom open and respectful by starting discussions with low stakes questions and building on what students say. I design my courses with Universal Design for Learning, in which I am certified, so students have multiple ways to access material, participate, and show what they have learned. I also teach reflexively, asking for feedback at the start and midpoint of each semester and adjusting the course as I go.
